"This year's appeal is particularly urgent," said WVEMS President Yves Cantin. "We had planned on just replacing a 12-year-old ambulance, but due to unforeseen mechanical problems, a second ambulance needs immediate replacement at an additional cost of $175,000."
The Westport EMS holds an annual fundraising campaign as it is not funded by Westport tax dollars and so depends on the donations from the community. The money raised is used to train volunteers and buy the equipment needed to operate Westport's Emergency Medical Service, from bandages to ambulances and from splints to sophisticated heart monitors.
"We hope this year that the entire community will help the ambulance service continue to be there at the leading edge of medical technology for every Westporter," Cantin added.
This year's mailing includes a list of a number of conditions that warrant an immediate call to 911, as well as ways to determine stroke symptoms. By knowing how to recognize serious medical problems, not delaying timely treatment because of a denial of symptoms, and following a simple rule -- when in doubt call 911 — Westporters can help WVEMS provide the rapid, effective treatment and transport that are critical to saving lives.
